Where many pictures of the Library of Congress show its domes and facades, this ink drawing lays out the ground floor as a set of walls, rooms and passages. It belongs to the Library's architectural and engineering drawings, a collection of plans used for construction, repairs and later changes. The main building on Capitol Hill, designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and completed in 1897, was meant to house a rapidly growing national collection, so a floor plan like this one shows how the space was arranged for readers, staff and storage.
