Among the library's architectural drawings, this ink and watercolor plan records the first story of the Library of Congress in Washington, the main building of which, the Thomas Jefferson Building, was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened in 1897. Floor plans like this one show how rooms, corridors and stairs were arranged, which makes them useful to historians tracing how the library's public and staff spaces were organized. The wash tints give the plan its readable structure, a reminder that the building was meant to be a monument as well as a working library.
