This drawing is a first-story plan of the Library of Congress building, rendered in ink and graphite on paper, and it shows the ground-level layout of the rooms and corridors. It is part of the Library's architectural and engineering drawings, a group of plans kept in the Prints and Photographs Division. The Library's main building in Washington was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened to the public in 1897, after years of construction. Plans like this one record how the architects arranged the building's public and working spaces, and they help researchers trace how the structure was conceived before its interiors were finished.
