A class in the First Division of Washington's public schools works with paper to build geometric forms, a lesson typical of the hands-on learning gaining ground in American classrooms around 1900. Such exercises grew out of manual training and kindergarten ideas that taught shape and measurement through making objects rather than copying figures from a chalkboard. The picture is a cyanotype, a blue-toned process valued for its low cost and reliable copying, which was often used to reproduce images of this kind. The date is only an estimate, and the names of the students and teacher are not recorded.
