Made about 1899 and kept in an album devoted to Eastern High School, this cyanotype is one of a group of Washington classroom scenes by Frances Benjamin Johnston. Cyanotypes were an inexpensive contact-print process that produced the blue-and-white tones seen here, and the method suited the documentary work of recording everyday school life. Johnston was a prominent photographer of her era, and her school pictures reflect the period's interest in public education and in how city schools were run. The record gives only a broad title and an approximate date, so the scene is best read as a view of school routine in Washington during the 1890s.
