Central High School, the city's public high school for boys in the 1890s, is the setting here, with students gathered for an assembly. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a leading Washington photographer, made this cyanotype around 1899 as part of a larger series on the city's public classrooms. The cyanotype process produces the cool blue tones typical of its era and was inexpensive, which made it useful for documentary work. The picture offers a look at how large groups of students were organized in one room at the turn of the century.
