Students at an outdoor exercise session handle long rods in this cyanotype, a drill of the kind American schools used to build posture and coordination in the late 1800s. The picture belongs to Frances Benjamin Johnston's series of Washington, D.C. public school scenes, grouped under "3rd Division" in her album. Cyanotypes like this one were made by exposing light-sensitive paper to sunlight, which produced the deep blue tones and gave the process its name. Johnston's images of the city's classrooms give a close look at how children were taught discipline and health around 1900.
