Rather than showing a single building or teacher, this cyanotype records classroom life and school activities in Washington, D.C., around 1899. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent women photographers of her day, made the series of Washington school images in the late 1890s as part of a broader effort to document American education. The cyanotype process, which produces its distinctive blue-and-white tones, was inexpensive and reliable, so it suited a large set of working prints. The image is worth a closer look for its glimpse of how public schooling in the capital was organized at the turn of the century.
