Labeled as a general classroom scene from the album's "1st Division," this cyanotype shows the interior of one of Washington's public schools around the turn of the century. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a leading documentary photographer of the era, made the series as part of a broader look at the city's schools, when public education in the capital was expanding and debates over school conditions were active. The cyanotype process, which produces its characteristic Prussian-blue tones from iron salts exposed to light, was inexpensive and durable, and it lets viewers study the rooms, furniture, and students' arrangement with unusual clarity.
