Children sail toy boats on the Reflecting Pool with the Lincoln Memorial rising at the far end, a pairing that makes this view distinct from the many other Washington scenes on the board. The photograph was taken in the 1920s, when the Mall was becoming a place for leisure as well as for official ceremony. The Lincoln Memorial had been dedicated in 1922, and the long pool, set between the memorial and the Washington Monument, drew families who came to wade, sail small boats, and walk along its edges. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a commercial archive of street and landmark views, and its everyday subject of children at play offers a glimpse of ordinary life beside a national monument.
