This aerial view looks down on the Capitol at the eastern end of the National Mall, with the long open grounds stretching west toward the monuments. The record dates it to the 1930s, though that date comes from an unverified caption card. By then the Mall was the centerpiece of the McMillan Plan of 1902, which had called for a formal, orderly landscape linking the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, and the federal buildings lining the Mall were still being built. Aerial photographs like this one were a fairly new way to record the city's layout, and they show how the Mall's wide axis was meant to be seen from above.
