A group of Washington, D.C., grade school students is shown on a tour of the U.S. Capitol, a kind of civic field trip that was becoming common in American schools around the turn of the twentieth century. The picture is a cyanotype, a contact printing process that yields white images on blue and was cheap and durable, which made it useful for documentary work. It belongs to the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress, and the record dates it tentatively to 1899, so the exact day of the outing is unknown.
