Schoolchildren work outdoors beside a stone building, measuring and sketching as they learn to observe and record the built environment. The image is a cyanotype, a cheap contact process that produces white lines on a deep blue ground, and it was one of the many album prints Frances Benjamin Johnston made of Washington's public schools in the late 1890s. Johnston was known for documenting everyday institutional life in the capital, and her school series shows how hands-on lessons in drawing and measurement were taught. The clothing the children wear is also a point of interest for anyone studying turn-of-the-century dress.
