A classroom in Washington, D.C., where children work through geometry problems, sets this picture apart from the many school scenes in the Johnston collection. Frances Benjamin Johnston likely made it around 1899, when she was photographing the city's public schools. The cyanotype process she used produced the distinctive blue-and-white print, a method valued at the time for being inexpensive and stable. Pictures like this one presented American public education in a favorable light, and the album placement helps place this scene within that larger body of work.
