Standing in Lincoln Park on Capitol Hill, this monument shows Abraham Lincoln with a freed man rising from a broken shackle at his feet. African Americans, many of them formerly enslaved, contributed much of the money for it, and Frederick Douglass spoke at its dedication in April 1876. Sculptor Thomas Ball designed the work. The monument's design has drawn criticism for showing the freed man kneeling beside a standing Lincoln, a choice that still prompts debate about how emancipation is remembered.
