From a vantage point at 14th and B streets, this panorama captures the open grounds of the capital in 1865, the year the Civil War ended. That spring Washington was in mourning for President Abraham Lincoln, who had been assassinated in April. This image is a copy negative on glass, made from an earlier original and held by the National Photo Company before its collection passed to the Library of Congress. The title comes from unverified information on the negative sleeve, and the visible streaks reflect natural deterioration of the original coatings.
