The Patent Office gives this 1865 panorama of Washington its name, and the building had an unusual wartime role. During the Civil War its large halls were turned into a hospital for wounded soldiers, and in March 1865 it hosted Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural ball. This item is a copy negative on glass, part of the National Photo Company Collection, and its record notes streaks and other blemishes from deterioration of the original coating. The title comes from unverified data supplied by the company, so the view's exact origin is worth reading with some caution.
