The Model Room of the Patent Office in Washington, D.C., was a showcase of inventions, where working models submitted with patent applications were displayed in glass cases for the public to examine. This stereograph half records the room around 1875, when the Patent Office occupied the Patent Office Building (now the Smithsonian's Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum) and drew crowds of visitors curious about new machines. Because it is a single half of a stereo pair, the image was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The caption card's notes are unverified, so the exact date and photographer remain uncertain.
