Taken in Washington on June 3, 1939, this studio portrait shows a son of Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose children were often in the public eye while their father led the country through the Depression and toward war. The picture came from Harris & Ewing, a Washington studio founded in 1905 that photographed many senators, officials and visiting dignitaries over the following decades. Its date falls just months before Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, when the White House and the president's family were closely watched. The formal pose and controlled studio lighting reflect the conventions of official portraiture of the period.
