A 1937 picture captioned "Profit sharing program a success" points to the business and labor debates that filled the press during the New Deal years. The Washington studio Harris & Ewing, founded in 1905, made the photograph. The firm photographed officials, visitors and local events for decades, and its negatives now form a large part of the Library of Congress collection. Profit-sharing plans, which give workers a share of company earnings, drew wide interest in the 1930s as employers and unions looked for ways to ease Depression-era tensions. The record does not name the people pictured, so the image is best read as a document of that moment's hope for shared prosperity.
