A scale model of a rum runner chaser, photographed at the Navy Yard in Washington, shows one of the fast patrol craft built to catch smugglers during Prohibition. The national ban on alcohol, in force from 1920 until 1933, drew the Navy and Coast Guard into a long pursuit of boats carrying liquor along the coasts and waterways. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's streets, buildings and events in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative. Its title and date come from information written on the negative itself, which has not been independently verified, and the plate shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging glass.
