This drawing isolates the flywheel of a steam engine at the Washington Navy Yard, along with its cam ring and the gudgeon that supported the shaft. The flywheel steadied the engine's motion, so its parts were central to making the machine work. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, then overseeing public buildings in the young capital, dated the sheet March 22, 1810, in Philadelphia and labeled it for the Navy Yard. The careful washes and notations show how engineers of the period planned machinery in detail before it was cast and assembled.
