This drawing by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, dated January 17, 1810, shows side elevations of the timber framing built to support a steam engine at the Washington Navy Yard. The engine was one of the early steam-powered installations in the young republic, and Latrobe, the architect known for his work on the U.S. Capitol, designed much of its machinery and supporting structure. Drawings like this one, which combine ink, wash, watercolor, and graphite, reveal how carefully engineers of the period planned the wooden bearings and braces that carried heavy machinery. The sheet is part of Latrobe's archive at the Library of Congress.
