From across the water, beyond the Navy Yard, this view places the United States Capitol at a distance over the city instead of making it the sole focus. The Navy Yard sat on the Eastern Branch of the Potomac, now called the Anacostia River, and it was a working naval depot, so the waterfront in the foreground reflects that activity. The print reproduces a painting by George Cooke, with the color aquatint engraved by William J. Bennett and published in New York by Lewis P. Clover around 1834, when Washington was still a small, sparsely built capital. Color views like this were popular with buyers who wanted images of American cities.
