Few views of the city from this height survive from the 1920s, when aerial photography was still a young craft. Taken from an airplane, the picture shows downtown Washington as a grid of streets, rooftops, and open green space rather than as a set of street-level facades. The decade was a period of federal building in the capital, and the Federal Triangle redevelopment, which would reshape the area between the Capitol and the White House, was taking shape around these years. The exact date is uncertain, so the record's "192-?" marks it as sometime in the 1920s.
