Columbia Hospital for Women, the subject of this print, was one of the few Washington institutions devoted specifically to women's medical care, and its image here shows the building as it stood in the early twentieth century. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital's buildings, streets, and landmarks between about 1907 and 1932. Its large collection gives historians a useful record of how Washington looked during those decades, when the city was growing quickly and its institutions were expanding.
