Men seated beside hospital beds in a Walter Reed ward give this print a quieter subject than most images of wartime medicine. The hospital took its name from Major Walter Reed, the Army physician who helped prove that mosquitoes carry yellow fever, and it grew into a major center for treating soldiers. Photographs like this one were often made to document Army medical facilities, so the arrangement of beds and people likely reflects what the institution wanted to show. The print is retouched, a common step in official and commercial photographs of the period to sharpen details in the negative.
