Cliffburne Hospital is shown here as a field of white canvas tents, drawn from a high vantage point so that every ward and walkway is visible at once. Issued in New York by Charles Magnus around 1862, the lithograph belongs to a popular series of bird's-eye views that showed Union military installations to an audience eager to see the war's home front. Washington filled with sick and wounded soldiers after the early battles of 1861 and 1862, and tent hospitals like this one were a common answer to the crowding. The print is worth studying for its layout, which reveals how the wards were arranged and how much ground the medical care of a single army required.
