Canvas tents set up as hospital wards were a common sight in Washington, D.C., during the Civil War, and this view of the tent wards at Campbell Hospital records one such arrangement. The photograph dates to 1861, early in the war, when the capital was taking in sick and wounded soldiers faster than permanent buildings could be found for them. James F. Gibson, who worked in Alexander Gardner's Washington studio, made the image, which is now part of the Library of Congress's Civil War photograph collection. Looking closely at the tents and the open ground around them shows how improvised these early medical facilities were.
