Few images on this board are as document-like as this one: a map of the District of Columbia prepared by J.G. Langdon, reproduced as a photomechanical print measuring about 71 by 77 centimeters. Its subject is the layout of the federal city, the grid of avenues and streets that grew out of Pierre Charles L'Enfant's 1791 plan for the capital on the Potomac. Reproductions like this one let planners, engineers and historians work from a single sheet, and they show how the intended city was laid out on paper long before most of it was built.
