Students at a drawing class in Western High School in Washington, D.C., sit at their work in this cyanotype, a blue-toned print made with a process once favored for its low cost and sharp detail. The record dates it tentatively to around 1899, and it is one of the photographs in an album of Western High School compiled by Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer who documented the city's schools and their daily routines. Because cyanotypes were printed by contact with sunlight rather than developed chemically, they have a distinctive pale blue cast, and the image offers a glimpse of late nineteenth-century classroom instruction in the nation's capital.
