Anacostia High School's art class, pictured in 1939, offers a glimpse of school life in the capital just before the United States entered the war. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, and its title was supplied by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded Washington's streets, buildings, and institutions. That title is marked as unverified, so the setting is best read as a general view of the school's art instruction. The film base shows streaks and blemishes from age and deterioration of its coatings.
