Dunbar High School, which opened in 1870 as the M Street School and took the name of the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar in 1916, was one of the first public high schools for Black students in the United States. Its students were segregated by law in the District of Columbia's school system, yet the school built a reputation for rigorous academics and produced many leaders in education, law, medicine, and the arts. The 1937 view shows the school's front facade during the period when Dunbar was a center of Black intellectual life in the capital. The group portraits in this series capture the students and staff who gave the school its reputation.
