Western High School stood in Washington, D.C., and this view comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of work she assembled as one of the period's most active documentary photographers. Johnston was known for photographing architecture, schools and institutions with a careful eye for structure and daylight, and her pictures of the capital from around 1900 record a city in the middle of rapid growth. Western was one of the city's public high schools for white students, and images like this one preserve how such buildings presented themselves to the public at the turn of the century.
