Few aerial views from the 1920s show a Washington traffic circle as clearly as this one, with its streets radiating outward like spokes. Dupont Circle takes its name from Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, whose memorial fountain was dedicated in the circle in 1921. By 1924 the area was becoming one of the city's busiest residential and commercial neighborhoods, and the vantage point from the air shows how the streets were laid out around the central park. Photographs like this were still a fairly new way of recording the city from above.
