Dupont Circle, where Connecticut and Massachusetts Avenues meet, was named for Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, and this view shows the traffic circle from above, a vantage that makes its radiating avenues and the surrounding blocks easy to read. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, produced many such street views for postcards and publication. Between 1910 and 1930 the neighborhood was growing into a fashionable residential district of large houses and new apartment buildings, so the picture captures a city still taking shape around its planned street grid.
