Bladensburg Road, which runs northeast out of the city toward the Maryland line, is the focus here, with Mount Olivet Cemetery visible at the right edge. The cemetery, a Catholic burial ground opened in 1858, sat on the approach to the city's outskirts, and the street railway lines serving the road carried residents out to such edges during the early 1900s. Notice how the scene pairs the open roadside landscape with the rail infrastructure that was helping to push Washington's growth outward in these decades.
