Few graves in Washington are as quietly striking as the bronze figure in Rock Creek Cemetery that marks Marian "Clover" Adams, wife of the historian Henry Adams, who died in 1885. Rather than a headstone bearing her name, her husband commissioned the work from sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens: a seated, hooded form whose face is hidden in shadow, often called simply "Grief." This 1923 photograph shows the monument more than three decades after its installation, when it had already become one of the cemetery's best-known sights. The figure carries no inscription, which has invited visitors to read their own meanings into it ever since.
