The Washington Monument is an obelisk of white marble and granite rising from the National Mall, and this glass negative captures it in the decade between about 1910 and 1920, a time when the monument had been completed only a few decades earlier. Construction began in 1848 and stalled for years before the shaft was finished in 1884, and its dedication followed in 1885. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for color and black-and-white views of American landscapes, cities and landmarks, which marketed its photographs widely to tourists and schools. The plate is a large 8 by 10 inch negative, a format that gave the photographer fine detail in the stone.
