The subject is the Washington Monument, the marble obelisk on the National Mall, begun in 1848 and not completed until 1884 after years of stalled work. The title calls the scene a view of the monument under construction, but that label comes from unverified data supplied by the National Photo Company, and the 1909 to 1940 date range is only an estimate, so the view may instead show later repair or grounds work. Either way, the monument's uneven building history, including a long pause after 1854, makes it one of the capital's most recognizable landmarks.
