Titled simply "Washington National Monument," this record points to the obelisk on the National Mall in the nation's capital, long before its final form was settled. Construction began in 1848, but money ran short and the project stalled for years, and in 1854 a nativist group called the Know-Nothings seized the site. Work resumed after the Civil War, and the shaft was finished in 1884 and dedicated in 1885. The change in stone color about a third of the way up marks where the building stopped and started again.
