This view of the Washington Monument carries the title "Erected at the City of Washington, D.C.," a phrase that points to the monument's early years, when the obelisk was still a work in progress. Construction began in 1848 from a design by Robert Mills, but funding problems halted work in 1854, and the shaft stood partly built for more than two decades. The monument was finally completed in 1884 and dedicated in 1885. Prints like this one, made while the project was unfinished, show how the national memorial was imagined long before it reached its full height.
