The Tidal Basin view stands out for its pairing of the Washington Monument with the cherry trees that ring the water, a combination that became one of the capital's most recognizable scenes. The cherry trees were a gift from Tokyo in 1912, and by the 1920s the blossoms drew crowds every spring to the basin's edge. This print is hand-colored, so its artist added tints by hand to a photograph, a technique that gave pink blossoms and soft greens to the monument's pale stone. Its copyright registration number suggests it was issued for commercial sale as a souvenir view.
