Skaters glide across a frozen surface with the Washington Monument rising in the distance, a pairing that makes this glass negative stand apart from the monument-focused views on the board. The image comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of work made by a commercial studio that photographed Washington sights for visitors and postcard buyers in the early twentieth century. Winter skating on the open grounds near the Mall was a popular pastime in the capital, and scenes like this show how the monument served as a backdrop for everyday leisure as well as a civic symbol. The negative was donated to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947.
