The title pairs a "Herald Sheperdstown Tour" with the Washington Monument, though the record notes that this wording came from unverified data written on the negative sleeve. The monument is the marble obelisk on the National Mall, completed in 1884 and opened to visitors in 1888. The National Photo Company, which recorded many Washington landmarks for tourists in the early twentieth century, made the negative around 1920. Streaks and small blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
