Bathers in the foreground and the Washington Monument rising behind them make this 1922 negative an unusual pairing of leisure and national landmark. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that photographed the capital's sights and everyday scenes in the early twentieth century, made it on a glass plate. The obelisk, finished in 1884, was once the tallest structure in the world, so setting it beside people at play shows how the city's open grounds were used. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from deterioration in the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
