Captured on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, this view of the Washington Monument comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded American cities and scenery in the early 1900s. Robert Mills designed the obelisk to honor George Washington, but construction began in 1848, stalled for years, and was not completed until 1884. Its marble shaft rises about 555 feet over the National Mall, long the tallest structure in the capital.
