Taken after dark, this print shows the Washington Monument as a pale shaft rising against a black sky, a different view from the daytime scenes that usually document the obelisk. Construction stalled for decades over funding shortages and the Civil War, and the monument was finally completed in 1884 and dedicated in 1885. By the early 1900s it was the capital's most recognizable landmark. The copyright notation suggests the view was issued for public sale, part of a market in souvenir views that drew many visitors to the city.
