This nighttime view is taken from the Treasury grounds, looking west across the basin toward the Washington Monument, a vantage that puts the obelisk in a long, open setting rather than at its base. The record dates the print to about 1920, and it is a rare detail that the photographer chose to show the monument after dark. Construction of the obelisk, designed by Robert Mills, began in 1848, stalled for decades, and was finally completed in 1884, so by the 1920s it had long stood as a symbol of the nation's capital.
