High on the shaft, not at its base, this engraving shows workers setting the capstone, the pointed top that finished the obelisk. Alexander Millar, a Washington, D.C., engraver, drew the scene, and the copyright date of early February 1885 places it just before the monument's dedication later that month. The capstone had been set in December 1884, so the print records the final stage of construction. Its scaffolding and rigging suggest how precarious the work was more than 500 feet above the city.
